A man with indomitable resolve, the Punisher was created by Gerry Conway, John Romita Sr., and Ross Andru for The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1974). He initially appeared as a villain to the Wall Crawler; however, the character has since been reframed as an anti-hero.

On the pages of comic books, Francis “Frank” Castle (the vigilante’s real name) adopted his violent crusade after the deaths of his wife and two children. They were murdered by the mob while in New York City’s Central Park, a consequence of witnessing a hit. Consumed by a desire to enact vengeance, Frank vows to rid the world of criminality and becomes the Punisher, his chest embellished by a white skull emblem. Many of his comics are considered classics, such as War Zone (1992), Welcome Back, Frank (2000), and Born (2003).

Over the years, the character has also appeared in a variety of films: The Punisher (1989), The Punisher (2004), and The Punisher: War Zone (2008) — amongst others. These movies have allowed multiple actors to take on the role, including Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane, and Ray Stevenson. As well as in these films, Frank made the transition to Netflix for the second season of Daredevil. Played by Jon Bernthal, the gun-toting vigilante fought against and with Charlie Cox’s Matthew Murdock before starring in his own self-titled series in 2017, which spanned two seasons.
