Somewhere Beyond The Moon

Directed by Steven Spielberg (who is also known for his work on films such as Indiana Jones and Saving Private Ryan), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial was released in 1982. Telling a story that focuses heavily on science-fiction, the movie begins with the eponymous character (Pat Welsh), a member of an alien crew visiting California to gather plant specimens, becoming separated from his people.

He flees from the U.S. government and encounters a young boy called Elliott Taylor (Henry Thomas), who entices the strange creature into his home with candy and hides him from his mother, Mary (Dee Wallace). Over time, their bond deepens, and Elliott — now joined by his brother, Michael (Robert MacNaughton), and sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore) — discovers E.T.’s incredible abilities, such as telekinesis and healing. Elliott also finds himself developing a strong empathic connection, which causes him to experience the emotions of his alien friend. This proves problematic, however, as E.T.’s health is declining at a rapid rate, and the government is still in pursuit.

By the time the agents find their quarry, both he and Elliott are on death’s door. The pair have managed to contact E.T.’s people, using a device created from a Speak & Spell, but their spaceship has yet to arrive. Without his connection to the hive mind, E.T. dies. Fortunately, his people return in time to resuscitate him, and he is able to leave the planet.
