When You Wish Upon A Star

Created by Italian writer Carlo Collodi during the late 1800s, The Adventures Of Pinocchio is a children’s book that follows its eponymous character, a living puppet. In the story, he is crafted out of wood by a poor man called Geppetto, who dreams of improving his prospects through the art of puppeteering. Almost immediately, Pinocchio — having been given a fully functional body — shows off his mischievous character and gets his creator in trouble with the local police force. He later returns home and encounters a cricket with the ability to talk, who proceeds to warn the young marionette about the dangers of misbehaviour, a moral lesson that is quickly (and violently) dismissed. Throughout the remainder of the book, Pinocchio finds himself interacting with various ill-intentioned characters, such as the Fox and the Cat. To receive a flesh-and-blood body, he must first overcome his negative impulses and learn how to act with humility.

In 1940, Walt Disney Productions released an animated adaptation of the popular story, following in the footsteps of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (1937). Like the source material, the film follows Pinocchio’s journey to become a better person, the puppet having been informed by a blue fairy that she will transform him into a real boy. However, unlike its predecessor, Disney’s version includes a number of musical numbers, the most famous of which is “When You Wish Upon A Star.”
