Age Of Reckoning

First released in 1983, Warhammer is a tabletop game published by Games Workshop. Players use a variety of minifigures (25–250mm tall) on a simulated battlefield and attempt to beat their opponent by rolling the six-sided dice and engaging in simple calculations. Unlike previous tabletop games that had come before it, Warhammer incorporated its own models to be used with the supplementary rulebooks. Over the course of multiple decades, the line continued as new figures and rulebooks were announced.

The setting of the game draws inspiration from real-world history and author Michael Moorcock’s Elric series of books, presenting an atmosphere that is dark and gritty. Shaped by the “Old Ones,” the world is inhabited by various races: Humans, Elves, Dwarfs, Halflings, Ogres, Goblins, and Orcs. Many of these species formed vast empires — such as the High Elves, the Empire, the Skaven, and the Warriors Of Chaos — and frequently engage in violent interaction with rival factions.

In addition to the original game, Games Workshop also released Warhammer 40,000 in 1987. This game takes place in the distant future, focusing on a group of humans who are under threat from hostile aliens and supernatural creatures (including Orks and Elves). In this universe, darkness has all but overwhelmed the last remnants of human civilization, who fight ceaselessly against malevolent threats. The stories predominantly highlight the trials of militaristic groups like the fan-favorite Space Marines, and because of the franchise’s pessimistic outlook, it is recognized as being part of the “grimdark” genre.
