Life On The Outside

Created by the writer and illustrator Sui Ishida, Tokyo Ghoul (2011–2014) is a Japanese manga series that was published in Weekly Young Jump, a magazine owned by the Tokyo-based company Shueshia. Each issue has been collected across 14 volumes, and it was succeeded by a prequel and sequel series: Tokyo Ghoul: Jack (2013) and Tokyo Ghoul:re (2014–2018).

The plot of the manga revolves around the student Ken Kaneki, who unwittingly finds himself on a date with a ghoul, a human-like creature that consumes the flesh of man. The ghoul in question, Rize Kamishiro, attempts to feed on him; however, Kankei survives and undergoes surgery in hospital. When he wakes, he discovers that his life was saved by transferring Rize’s organs into his body, a process that makes him a half-ghoul. Requiring human flesh to survive, he starts a new life with a group of ghouls who run a local coffee shop, “Anteiku”. He must learn to assimilate with ghoul society while keeping his transition a secret from his best friend, Hideyoshi Nagachika, and the rest of the humans with whom he interacts.

In 2014, an anime series based on the fan-favorite manga was aired on TV. Produced by Pierrot, the show closely follows the source material, depicting Kankei’s development into a member of the ghouls and the problems that this creates in his day-to-day life. Like the manga, there were several follow-ups, one of which was Tokyo Ghoul √A (2015).

Similarly, 2017 saw the release of a live-action film adaptation by director Kentarō Hagiwara. Actor Masataka Kubota played Kankei, and he reprised his role for Tokyo Ghoul S (2019), the direct sequel.
