Somewhere Above The Sea

Created by Pixar Animation Studios, Luca (2021) is an animated film that centers around its eponymous character, Luca Paguro (Jacob Tremblay), and his best friend, Alberto Scorfano (Jack Dylan Grazer). Both of them are sea monsters who live near to a coastal Italian town of Portorosso, a place where Luca’s parents, Daniela (Maya Rudolph) and Lorenzo (Jim Gaffigan), forbid him from visiting. Despite their warning, Alberto — who migrated to the surface — manages to convince him to breathe the fresh air. This leads to the discovery that sea monsters adopt human forms when they are dry and only revert to their normal appearance upon contact with the water.

Unfortunately, Luca’s parents catch wind of his activities and make plans to send him to live with his uncle Ugo (Sacha Baron Cohen). This backfires, however, as the young sea monster returns to Alberto so that they can find a real-life Vespa, a motorised scooter over which the pair bonded. During the pair’s above-sea activities, they meet a local girl called Giulia Marcovaldo (Emma Berman), who rescues Luca from an encounter with bully Ercole Visconti (Saverio Raimondo). She offers to help them win a triathlon — comprising biking, eating pasta, and swimming — which will give them enough money to purchase their scooter should they win. However, the sea monsters’ friendship becomes strained as Luca grows closer to Giulia and considers abandoning their plans to explore the world.
