A Massive Video Game

Created by video-game developer Blizzard Entertainment, World Of Warcraft (WOW) began as a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMO) that allowed players to create their own character — from a selection of two factions (the Alliance and the Horde) and their respective races — and complete quests across the fantasy land of Azeroth. The environment is populated by enemies, non-player characters (NPCs), and other players. Sharing the experience, players can face each other in player-vs-player (PVP) combat or join forces to conduct raids on dungeons. As they obtain loot and develop their skills, new possibilities are presented.

In addition to the vanilla game, there have been a number of expansion packs, each of which expands upon the lore: The Burning Crusade (2007), Wrath Of The Lich King (2008), Cataclysm (2010), Mists Of Pandaria (2012), Warlords Of Draenor (2014), Legion (2016), Battle For Azeroth (2018), and Shadowlands (2020). To this day, WOW remains one of the most successful video games in history, having achieved a record-breaking number of subscribers and continued to craft new content decades after its release.

In 2016, director Duncan Jones released a live-action adaptation of the game: Warcraft. The plot draws inspiration from the source material, depicting the hostile interactions between the people of Azeroth and the invading Horde. Organised by a warlock named Gul’dan (Daniel Wu), the orc clans mobilise to pass through a portal that leads to Azeroth, where they intend to settle because of the slow degradation of their home world, Draenor. To stop the orc’s advancement, King Llane Wrynn (Dominic Cooper), the wizard Medivh (Ben Foster), and Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel) assemble their own army. However, members of both sides begin to question their actions.
