Protector Of The Moors

Maleficent (voiced by Eleanor Audley) was a character created for the animated film Sleeping Beauty, which was released by Walt Disney Productions in 1959. An evil counterpart to the three good fairies — Merryweather (Barbara Luddy), Flora (Verna Felton), and Fauna (Barbara Jo Allen) — the so-called “Mistress Of All Evil” placed a curse on Princess Aurora (Mary Costa), which destined the infant to prick her finger on a spinning wheel and perish at the end of her sixteenth birthday.

In 2014, Maleficent took center stage for her own self-titled solo film, directed by Robert Stromberg. Actor Angelina Jolie played the part of the live-action character, presenting a more sympathetic take on the “evil fairy”. Before she became a dark figure, she was a young girl in love with a peasant boy named Stefan (Sharlto Copley). However, they slowly drifted apart, returning to their separate lives. Many years later, Maleficent has assumed her role as protector of the Moors, a magical forest on the border of the kingdom of King Henry (Kenneth Cranham). The naïve king tries to attack Maleficent's homeland, but he is repelled by her power. Unwilling to admit defeat, he offers a grand reward for anybody who can kill her. The one who rises to the challenge is none other than Stefan, who sets his former love on a path of revenge.

This reimagined take on the world-famous fairytale character proved immensely successful, justifying the development of a direct sequel: Mistress Of Evil (2019). In this film, the protagonist faces the misconceptions of her neighbours, who view her as a villain, and the emergence of a race known as the Dark Fey.
