The Master Of Horror

Born in 1963, Junji Ito is a critically acclaimed mangaka (a manga artist) who has lent his talents to many of the most popular stories in the horror genre. Some of his works include Tomie, Uzumaki, Gyo, Souichi's Journal Of Delights, and Junji Ito's Cat Diary: Yon & Mu.

His first published work, Tomie, was serialized in the manga magazine Monthly Halloween, being released from 1987 to 2000. The story centers on its eponymous character: Tomie Kawakami, a black-haired woman with a notable beauty mark beneath her left eye. Over the course of the series, she uses her supernatural abilities to coerce people — men and women — into committing terrible acts of violence, their minds driven to jealousy. Tomie is often killed by those whom she torments, but she always returns to continue the cycle of death.

Uzamaki (1998–1999) is another example of Ito’s exploration of the supernatural, depicting the fictional city of Kurouzu-cho and the struggles that are brought about by a mysterious curse. This curse involves spirals, which impact the mental stability of the city’s residents. Over time, a great typhoon devastates the city’s structures and forces the survivors to live in old terraced houses. More structures are built to accommodate the population, but these likewise adhere to the ever-present spiral pattern.

Moving away from the psychological, Gyo (2001–2002) introduces the novel concept of walking fish, which utilize mechanical legs as a means of increasing the reach of a weaponized virus. This mad scientist’s invention was intended to turn the tide of World War II for the Japanese, but the prototypes were sunk into the ocean by enemy aircraft. Readers follow Tadashi and Kaori as they attempt to survive the incoming horde of undead fish.
