Embrace Your Emotions

Directed by Pete Docter (who based the story on the personality changes of his daughter), Inside Out (2015) is an animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios. The plot focuses on the inner workings of Riley (Kaitlyn Dias), an 11-year-old girl whose father (Kyle MacLachlan) has decided to relocate his family to San Francisco for a new job opportunity. As she struggles to cope with her new surroundings, her emotions — Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), and Anger (Lewis Black) — face their own problems. Joy and Sadness are pulled away from their stations during a scuffle, and Riley’s core memories are damaged. Without these two emotions, Riley is negatively influenced by Fear, Disgust, and Anger. They cause her to distance herself from those she cares about, and her “personality islands” begin collapsing into the Memory Dump.

While trying to return to Headquarters, Joy and Sadness meet Bing Bong (Richard Kind), an anthropomorphic pink elephant and Riley’s imaginary friend. He attempts to help them on their journey, going so far as to sacrifice his own life. Having found her way to Headquarters, Joy finally acknowledges the role of Sadness, giving her the controls to save Riley’s psyche.
